The homestead
You arrive with a city car, a tent and your savings. The rest of it, from the first cleared acre to the cabin, the garden and a winter's worth of split and stacked firewood, you build yourself.
01Clear the land
Every acre starts as forest. Drop trees with a saw or hire a crew, buck the trunks at the paint marks, carry the logs and rounds, then split with a maul or a log splitter.
02Build it yourself
Buy plans and raise sheds, barns, pole barns, a barndominium or a cabin piece by piece. Guided ghost boards show you where every piece goes. A log cabin goes up log by log, on piers or a poured pad.
03Keep the lights on
Solar panels, batteries and a generator, all measured in real kilowatt-hours. Pick the burned-out-developer backstory and your paycheck only comes on days the laptop and internet stay powered from 9 to 5. Water tanks freeze, pipes split, and creosote builds up until you book the chimney sweep.
04Grow and raise
Till fields by hand or tractor, plant orchards, run a greenhouse with climate control, and grow cocoa into chocolate in a 115-foot geodome. Hens need feed and water, and their eggs break if you run with them.
05Hunt and fish
The herd has ruts and seasons, and there's a game warden, so get your licence. There are 13 weapons from a .22 to a bow, with shot placement and blood trails. Then gut, hang and butcher, or take it to the processor.
06Machines
A pickup with room for four logs in the bed, a side-by-side, a tractor with 11 implements and an excavator for ground work. Rent a stump grinder, mulcher, trencher, auger or boom truck when you need one.
07Go to town
Drive the county road into town and walk into real shops with clerks behind the counter: the General Store and Post Office, Dottie's Feed & Seed, Whitcomb Hardware, Ridgeline Gun & Tackle, the lumber yard and the diner.
A year in the woods
You start on the first of April. The seasons turn on real climate normals for northeastern Pennsylvania: mud, green, color, then snow. Whatever you get done before the first hard freeze is what you'll have for the long nights.
Spring
Cozy
Frozen pipes and dead batteries cost comfort and warnings, never lasting harm. The lottery-winner backstory is available.
Homesteader
Pipes split, the ER sends a bill, hens die without water, and chimney fires happen. Plan like your life depends on it.
After the first winter
Surviving the winter is chapter one. Every valley gets its own Hollow, a set of oddities, secrets and silly recipes that's different from every other valley, shared by everyone who plays in it.

His training ground on the back forty runs 13 hands-on lessons: firewood, building from plans, the greenhouse, chickens, fishing, hunting and keeping meat. A glowing marker shows where to go, and the button to press lights up on your screen.

Enter a name, start your own valley or join someone else's from the list of who's online. Everyone in a valley shares the town, the Hollow and its secrets.
